VUMC's ShedMEDS protocol reduces exposure of potentially inappropriate medications

One in six Americans over 65 who take multiple prescription drugs are at risk of major drug-drug interactions. These adverse drug effects can lead to serious side effects, including cognitive impairment.

One in six Americans over 65 who take multiple prescription drugs are at risk of major drug-drug interactions. These adverse drug effects can lead to serious medical problems, cognitive impairment, falls, hospitalization, or even death.

Deprescribing refers to a systematic effort in order to reduce or stop the dosage of medication or to make sure that it is safe and effective. Sheds-MEDS is a hospital-based, pharmacist or nurse practitioner-led and patient-centered deprescribing protocol that was developed at Vanderbilt University Medical Center.The rates of adverse drug reactions were similar in patients randomly selected to receive the intervention, but the reduction in medication burden lasted at least 90 days and "the intervention additionally decreased exposure to potentially inappropriate medicines," researchers reported.

Sandra Simmons, PhD, professor in Medicine and Psychology, and the Paul V. Hamilton MD Chair for Geriatrics; Amanda Mixon, MD and MPH, associate professors of Medicine, Biomedical Informatics and Medicine.

Mixon and Simmons co-lead U.S. Deprescribing Network's Pilot and Exploratory Studies Core. This interdisciplinary network of older adults, physicians, pharmacists and nurses, and their care partners, is advancing deprescribing research through the support of the National Institute on Aging of National Institutes of Health.
