Dana White, President of Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC), is adamant about the fact that Covington is the next opponent for Leon Edwards, who is currently undisputed champion. Muhammad believes that a match between Edwards and Covington has not been confirmed yet.
Muhammad's unbeaten streak has now reached 10 after he defeated Gilbert Burns on short notice last month (8 April 2023). Covington criticized Muhammad's unanimous victory, saying that "Remember the Name", who won by unanimous decision, will have to fight once more and will not be able to wait for his promised title shot.
Muhammad told MMA Fighting, "I think Colby's nervous. He saw that I won this fight and he was like, 'Oh crap! Maybe I'm going to lose my shot. Dana White might change his mind.'"
"Now, he is trying to pull strings, like, 'He must fight again because he is not a superstar.' I was like, bro, how did your pay-per-view against [Jorge] Masvidal go? Your fights are what raised the pay-per-view stock. You're a clown, where people think, maybe he will do something crazy if he headlines and maybe [Donald] Trump will come to the fights so let's grant him a title shot. There's nothing special in him.
"But I think that he sees the fact that I just won the fight, and the world knows I'm on an incredible 10-fight winning streak. I took on a fight with only three weeks' notice and went out there and beat the No. He continued."[Colby]'s last win is against No. He couldn't finish the man and almost got knocked down. Now he says, "Let me do ten interviews in a hurry and try to get some attention." He's getting desperate, and I like that. I like the little fear he has."
White's decision to give a title shot to Covington, who hasn't competed since March 2022, and is 2-2 over his last four fights -- led many in the community and the division to argue that Muhammad had earned the next chance. Even the champion Edwards has not been interested in facing "Chaos". With UFC returning on "Fight Island" for UFC 294 on Oct. 22, 2023, the timing could be perfect for Muhammad and his strong Middle Eastern fans to make the boss reconsider.
Muhammad said, "I'm not just talking. I'm also doing it to earn the boss's favor and to show him that I'm the man who can step in at a moment's notice whenever you need me. I'm more than just a talker. I will be a winner. I will be a champion. I won't be sitting on my spot. Abu Dhabi is probably telling UFC that they want this fighter to be on the show, and we want him to fight for the belt.
"The UFC should think Colby is not worth their time or energy," he concluded. Imagine if he beats Leon and you have that clown with a belt. He's the worst champion that you've ever had. He'll spend the next two years doing nothing else but his victory celebration."
