Sanders said that it was the ideology, the thought process and the forward thinking. He spoke to Channing Crowder, Fred Taylor, and Ryan Clark on March 7."It was meeting you at the crossroad. That's what was involved in that."
Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Fame cornerback, coached Jackson State for three seasons. After leading JSU to an undefeated season, Sanders was a hot coach. The Tigers won the Southwestern Athletic Conference championship once again and were in the Cricket Celebration Bowl losing to North Carolina Central in overtime 41-34.
Sanders' main concern during his tenure as Jackson State president was the stability and well-being of his assistant coaches, and support staff. Sanders was concerned about the business model and operation of HBCUs. This was one reason Sanders felt that he would be more successful if he went to a Power Five school.
"And sooner or later, you have to look in your mirror and ask yourself: Are they going to get there?"Sanders asked, "Do they really want to get there?"And I had to ask them those questions and be open with them, as well as myself and my staff. The Bible says, "Thy rod and your staff comfort me."They won't be comforted by $60,000 for the rest of their lives or $70,000 for the rest. This is not a bad thing. As a college football coach, this is not good. We have to do better.
Sanders said that Sanders thought it was hilarious that God could call him collect to come to Jackson, but he couldn't call me collect to go. You see, that is the problem we have as men. Sometimes we stay too long at certain places or certain things because we want it to be over.
