New Zealand Rugby has appointed Scott Robertson as Ian Foster’s successor. The 48-year old will take over the All Blacks' Rugby World Cup duties later this year. The Crusaders coach signed a four year contract that will run from 2024 to 2027.

Robertson stated that it was an honor to be named the next All Blacks coach. It's a job with a lot of responsibility, but it's an exciting opportunity to contribute to the legacy of the black shirt. It's an honor to represent your country as a player or coach."I can't wait!"

Robertson was vying for the position with Japan head coach Jamie Joseph after what RNZ called a "robust interviews process".His appointment was confirmed by the NZR board on Tuesday morning.

Mark Robinson, NZR chief executive, stated that Robinson's coaching record speaks for himself in terms of success."But his innovative approach to the game and his passion for his players was what stood out strongly during the interview process. He also wanted to contribute to the All Blacks legacy. We believe he is the right man to lead the team in 2024.

After Steve Hansen's retirement, Robertson was replaced by Foster as New Zealand rugby's top coach. Foster will continue in his position for this year's World Cup. Foster made the announcement earlier this month that it would not be re-apply for his job after NZR announced that it was beginning a search for a coach to replace him.

"We congratulate Scott for his appointment and look forward working together in 2024," NZR chair Patsy Reddy stated.

Robertson, who played 23 Tests with the All Blacks, has been a great coach since he retired from playing and moved into coaching. He rose from an assistant role at Canterbury to the head coaching position in 2013. He went on to win three Premiership titles between 2013, 2016 and 2017.He has been the Super Rugby coach for six consecutive years.

Robertson stated that it was crucial for the All Blacks to have sufficient time to plan for 2024, and beyond, in order to set them up for success in the next World Cup cycle."I have a job with the Crusaders, and that will be my main focus until the end of Super Rugby. But, I will now have the chance to work with NZR in order to finalize some key appointments in my coaching team and management team, so we can get off to a good start next year."
