Fairleigh Dickinson defeats Purdue to become the second 16 seed to defeat one seed in NCAA Tournament history.

The Knights joined UMBC. Virginia was upset in 2018 by UMBC.16 seeds beat No.16 seeds to beat No.
Fairleigh Dickinson, 16 seed, delivered a modern-day David against Goliath story in Friday's first round of the NCAA Tournament. She became the second No.16 seed in March Madness history has defeated a No.1 seed in a shocker of 63-58 over No.1 seed Purdue East Region
FDU, the smallest college basketball team, defeated the Boilermakers by shooting down 3-pointers, berating Purdue big man Zach Edey, and accelerating the pace to win the historic upset.
16 seeds were 1-147 all-time in first-round matchups against No. This year's tournament will see 1 seed enter and 1150 enter Friday, after the three other No. All the 1 seeds in this bracket advanced to Thursday's second round. The No.16 seed in tournament history to defeat a No. No. 1 seed was achieved in 2018 when No.16 seed UMBC defeated no. Virginia was defeated by 16-seed UMBC as a 20.5-point underdog. This set the bar for FDU at 23.5 points, which just cleared for the biggest upset in tournament history.
Purdue has won tight games and prevailed most of the season. It had a 10-2 record for games decided by five or fewer points at the start of the tournament. FDU did not give it any chance to improve on that record. FDU led for over 25 minutes and held the Boilermakers to just eight points in the final eight minutes.
Multiple teams have been seeded No. 2 in the NCAA Tournament for the second time.2 or better were bounced in round one after No. Arizona, the second seed, also lost in the opening round. Two No. Two No.
Fairleigh Dickinson was not able to participate in the NCAA Tournament due to technicalities. Merrimack defeated the Knights in the NEC Tournament title match. Merrimack, however, is still transitioning to Division I and was therefore ineligible for NCAA Tournament. The NEC awarded the automatic bid to the Knights. Fairleigh Dickinson was No. Fairleigh Dickinson was the No. 68 seed in the 68-team field. She had to defeat Texas Southern in Round Four to advance to the First Four.
Tobin Anderson, FDU coach, said that the team has faith in their work and that the guys are tough and competitive..They are tough, they are gritty, and they worked their tails off. We have just shocked the entire world."
Anderson had earlier in the week spoken out in a locker-room speech that went viral. He said that he became more convinced that his FDU team could beat Purdue the more he watched them on tape. Anderson apologized for the interaction after the game, saying that it was the right message, but not the right audience.
"We outplayed their team for 40 minutes. He said that we were the better team for 40 mins."Styles are what make fights, and our style is incredible. Boys, you just made history."College basketball history."
FDU's historic win was not only about the fighting style but also about the way it was conducted. The Knights applied pressure defensively with great success, forcing 16 turnovers and turning that into 16 points. They gave their bodies to take on the charges at the right times, harassed Zach Edey for Player of the Year and rode what seemed like a growing tide of momentum in the arena as the odds of it upset seem more realistic.
FDU's offense was able to make seven of 23 3-point attempts and only nine times turned it over. Sean Moore was crucial in propelling them to the end of the floor. He scored 14 of their 19 points in halftime and hit a big 3-pointer in the final minutes of the game.
Anderson stated that "our style is difficult to play against. I'm sure the Big Ten teams don't press as hard. Our speed, our style, and our quickness are all what [Purdue] admires. Our guys played well and defended themselves. We are happy to survive, advance, and move on."
