Volodymyr Zelenskiy has rejected a Russian order for a truce to celebrate Orthodox Christmas. He claimed it was a trick to stop the progress of Ukraine’s forces in eastern Donbas and bring in more of theirs. Zelensky, speaking in Russian and addressing both Russia and the Kremlin as a whole on Thursday, stated that Moscow had repeatedly ignored Kyiv’s peace plan.

According to the Kremlin, Vladimir Putin, Russian president, ordered Sergei Shoigu, his defense minister, to establish a 36-hour ceasefire in Ukraine along the entire line between noon on Friday and midnight on 7 January. Putin stated that Russian troops must be under fire for 36 hours to allow Orthodox Christians to celebrate Christmas in the "areas of hostilities".

Zelenskiy stated that the war would be over when Russian troops fled Ukraine or were expelled.

"They now want Christmas as a cover, even briefly, to stop our boys' advances in Donbas and bring equipment and ammunition closer to our positions," Zelenskiy stated in his nightly video address.

"What will that do for them? They will only see an increase in their total losses." He stated that the war would end "either when your soldiers leave or when we throw them out."

The US state department expressed doubts about Putin's ceasefire announcement, calling it "cynical" after Moscow's New Year's Day attack against Ukraine and saying that the US had "little faith in" the announcement's intentions.

Putin's announcement was made hours after Kirill a former convicted criminal and now the head of the Russian Orthodox Church called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and a Christmas truce. Kirill stated that he appealed for a ceasefire from "all parties in the internecine conflict" so that Orthodox people could attend services on Christmas Eve, and the day of Christ's Nativity.

The White House announced that Germany will supply an additional Patriot air defense battery to Ukraine. This was after Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, and Joe Biden, the US president, spoke by telephone.

"The two leaders expressed their common determination to continue to offer the necessary financial, military, and diplomatic support to Ukraine for so long as it is needed," the White House stated in a statement.

A White House official stated that the US believes that Vladimir Putin's ally Yevgeny Prgozhin is interested to take control of salt and gypsum mines near Bakhmut, Ukraine. The official said that there were indications that Prigozhin and Russia were motivated by monetary motives in Bakhmut. Prigozhin (former Putin Chef) is also the owner of the private Russian military company Wagner Group.
