Patricia Sparrow, Chief Executive Officer of COTA, has called on the Federal Government for improved access to dental care through the implementation of a publicly funded senior dental program that is bulk billed through Medicare.
It is more than a matter cosmetic appearance. Oral health is essential for overall health and quality life. However, good oral health is essential for overall health and well-being. Many older Australians have difficulty accessing basic dental services.
"Now is the time to invest in a national program for dental care. We need to see the government create a publicly funded senior dental program that is bulk-billed through Medicare. The scheme should be targeted at those most in need, such as seniors on low incomes and people who live in residential aged care homes or receive home care packages.
Sparrow stated that "a Senior Dental Benefits Schedule" will be an immeasurable investment by the Government. It will improve the dental and overall health, as well as reduce the long-term costs associated with a lack of access to care.
The Australian Dental Association has previously revealed that one in four Australians have untreated tooth decay and half have gum disease.
These figures show the importance of oral hygiene and its impact on overall well-being. Further research has also shown a link between gum disease and chronic conditions like diabetes, Alzheimer's, and heart disease. Australians should prioritize their dental health.
Dr Sarah Raphael, Advisory Services Manager Engagement & Advocacy Executive at the Australian Dental Association NSW Branch, suggests that you keep things simple when it comes to maintaining good oral hygiene in your later years.
Raphael stated, "It's the simple things - brushing twice daily with fluoride toothpaste, cleaning dentures, and leaving them out at night. Also, a healthy diet low in added sugar and tap water. Keep hydrated (have a water bottle at all times)."
