Sterling Pushes Cejudo Matchup Back To May

Aljamain Sterling, the UFC bantamweight champion, has revealed a new timeline for his fight with Henry Cejudo.

Sterling is still recovering from a bad bicep injury and his return to the Octagon is on hold. The 33-year old champion was last seen defending the title in a TKO win over T. J. Dillashaw at UFC 280 in October. It was Sterling's second straight title defense and a crucial victory that cemented his place at the top of the weight class.

Sterling was rumored as being set to defend his belt against Cejudo in March, before the title fight was moved to April. Now, it appears that "Funk Master" will be aiming for a May showdown against Cejudo." Triple Zero" is next. Sterling said that 110 percent is what he wants next in a recent interview with The Schmo. It's not going be April, though. After speaking with my medical team, the doctors, we're going give myself a bit more time. It will be May. It's amazing how everything seems to come full circle. I realized that I had suffered these injuries before the fight. Then, the rematch with Petr Yan and then the T. J. [Dillashaw] fight really kicked the can down. I was aware that bioXcelerators were going to be very successful. I am optimistic about that. I believe it will get me back at 100 percent so that I can compete against Triple Zero. I also remind him that he should not have retired.

Although some fighters might keep their injuries private to avoid alerting the competition, Sterling doesn't feel threatened because Cejudo knows about his bicep injury. The champion is open to all challengers and believes that he will achieve the same results as he has.

Sterling stated, "It doesn’t matter what he’s got going on,"Sterling said, "I'm going show up the way that I show up. He already knows what is bothering me. I will get it as close as possible to 100 percent, just like I did for my last two fights. A fighter who goes out there is never 100%.We do our best to keep ourselves as healthy as we can. It doesn't matter if you're T. J. or Petr Yan. When you step into the cage, you sign the dotted line and you have sealed your fate. Let the best man win, whatever happens. I feel like that best guy is always going to me.

Sterling, who is currently riding a eight-fight win streak at bantamweight, believes that his time in the division will be limited. The UFC champion is considering a move to featherweight, outside of a possible clash with Cejudo or a money fight against Sean O'Malley. This would open the door for Sterling's long-time partner, Merab Dvalishvili at 135 pounds.

Sterling stated that he could see a second round finish, TKO, and that Henry Cejudo is done, "he said." Maybe a money fight against Sean O'Malley, provided he can get his toenails in shape and make sure that he stays pretty on-the-sideline and healthy. He doesn't want fight anyone tough at top of the division because he needs more time for the grappling. He'd probably be running through us right now. Maybe that fight will tempt me. Or maybe I'll just go up to 145 and let Merab Dvalishvili reign terror over the rest of these guys at the bantamweight division."
