According to an announcement posted on the Inquirer website, the Philadelphia Inquirer was the victim of a cyberattack that prevented it from printing its Sunday edition. The newspaper may not have the ability to print its entire Monday edition even though its website is up and running slower than usual.

It is not clear who might be behind the cyberattack or the extent of damage that the hackers, who have not been named, have done to the newspaper. The Inquirer reportedly works with the FBI which has not publicly commented on the attack.

Hackers are increasingly using ransomware attacks to steal money from businesses and institutions. Hackers will typically hack into an online system to steal valuable information. They then digitally lock that information up with encryption that can only be unlocked by hackers. The ransom is usually demanded in cryptocurrency. If the money is not paid, the hackers threaten either to release the information or keep it locked away indefinitely.

The cyberattack was first detected on Saturday morning when the CMS system that was used to publish articles on the newspaper's site stopped working. Reporters found a way to post directly on the Inquirer's website.

Hughes told the Inquirer that he appreciated everyone's patience as he worked to restore systems and finish this investigation. We will keep our readers and employees informed as we learn more.

In 2018, the Los Angeles Times newspaper became the target of a ransomware attack. But in recent years the victims of ransomware attacks are more diverse, including JBS Meats in 2021 and Dallas this month. The attack on Dallas disrupted everything, from automated 911 systems to court systems.

Dallas officials say that the city's systems are still recovering from this latest attack and it may take months before they are fully restored. JBS Meats paid the attackers an additional $11 million in order to recover its data.
