We now have live images of Volvo's flagship SUV, the Volvo EX90, from its headquarters in Gothenburg (Sweden), where it was displayed to media members.
Volvo Car Malaysia claims that the EX90 will arrive in Malaysia by the fourth quarter 2024. Pricing has yet to be determined. This comes after the company teased the seven-seater flagship EV at an event held in Malaysia in December 2022. It stated that 75% of its sales would be fully electric vehicles by 2025.
The EX90 was designed and unveiled as a fully-electric model right from the beginning. It is the marque's first step towards a completely zero-emissions model lineup by 2030. This will be achieved through the introduction of one fully-electric model every year.
Buyers of the EX90 will have the option of choosing from two powertrain options. Both are dual-motor, AWD configurations. The Twin Motor offers 408 PS and 775 Nm. The Twin Motor Performance is more powerful and delivers 517 PS and 910Nm of torque.
One motor is located on each axle to provide propulsion. These are the Electric Front Axle drive (EFAD), and the Electric Rear Axle drive (ERAD). They produce 163 PS, 350 Nm, and 245 PS, respectively, as well as 420 Nm and 420 Nm of torque.
The Twin Motor variant can run the 0-100 km/h sprint in 5.9 seconds while the Twin Motor Performance variant can do the benchmark sprint at 4.9 seconds. Each is powered by a lithium-ion battery of 111 kWh (107 kWh usable) and has a range of 600 km for Twin Motor Performance and 590 km in Twin Motor Performance.
The EX90 can be charged at a maximum of 250 kW DC via a CCS2 connection. This allows for a 10-80% charge in 30 minutes. Alternately, the EX90 can be recharged with 180 km of range in 10 minutes. A Type 2 connection can charge the EX90 at up to 11kW. This will give you a full charge in just 11 hours.
The EX90 can also provide electricity through its bidirectional charging capability. It has an 11 kW output, which can be used to power a home, electric devices, or another electric vehicle. In the future, the EX90 will be able to support a vehicle-to-grid (V2G), which will allow users to sell their energy back to the grid during peak usage.
The exterior design of the EX90 is quite striking. Its signature LED daytime running light, the 'Thor’s hammer', opens along its length to reveal the main beam units. The LED tail lamps, which display an animated sequence upon startup, complement this setup.
Dimensionally, the EX90 is larger and wider than the XC90, which serves as the brand’s SUV flagship at the moment. The all-electric newcomer measures 5,037 mm in length, 1,964 mm in width, 1,747 mm high, and has a wheelbase measuring 2,985 mm. The EX90 is 29 mm lower than the XC90, and its wheelbase measures just 1 mm more than the combustion-engined model.
Are you curious about what cargo the EX90 can hold? An illustration of what items will fit into the EX90 electric SUV is provided by a diagram printed on the upper rear window interior trim. The volume of luggage is usually measured in volume. However, the Volvo EX90 lists all lengths available in the various seating configurations.
It states that the tailgate aperture can accommodate 1.13m (44.5in) in width and 0.78m (30.7in) in height. Interior lengths up to the third, second, and front rows are 0.38m, 1.2m, and 1.9m, respectively. Examples of items that will fit are a stroller and a potted plant, oxygen tanks and a golf bag. Items that can be used as home items include a lamp, fridge, and a washing machine.
The EX90's active safety equipment will be controlled by its suite sensors, which includes a roof-mounted Iris LiDAR sensor, five radars, and eight cameras. There are also two interior cameras and 16 ultrasonics.
