In three years, Indonesia has signed over a dozen agreements worth more than $15 Billion for battery materials and electric car production with global manufacturers like Foxconn, LG, and Hyundai.
Dec. 2020: Eramet and BASF sign a joint agreement for the assessment of the development of a nickel-cobalt hydrometallurgical refinery complex. This complex includes a High Pressure Acid Leaching (HPAL), plant, and a Base Metal Refinery(BMR), which will produce EV batteries materials. In 2023, a final investment decision could be made.
September 2021: South Korea’s LG Energy and Hyundai Motor Group begin construction of a $1.1billion battery cell plant to produce EV batteries. This is the first stage in their $9.8billion deal to develop integrated EV battery facilities.
February 20, 2022: The first shipment of nickel mixed-hydroxide precipitate to China is made by a joint venture of Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt and Tsingshan Holding Group. Morowali is the largest nickel processing center on the island of Sulawesi.
April 2022: Aneka Tambang and the IBC sign a framework deal with China's largest battery manufacturer CATL Group through its subsidiary Ningbo Contemporary Brunp Lygent Co. (CBL) for a partnership that stretches from nickel mining and processing to EV batteries manufacturing and battery recycling.
June 2022: South Korea’s LG Energy opens a $3.5B smelter that can produce 150,000 tonnes per year of nickel sulfate in Batang, Central Java. It will also construct a $2.4 billion factory at Batang park to produce 220,000 tons of precursor and 42,000 tonnes each of cathode.
July 2022: Vale Indonesia, China's Zhejiang Huayou Cobalt, sign an agreement to construct a 120,000-tonne mixed hydroxide precipitate plant (MHP), in Southeast Sulawesi.
August 2022: Indonesia launches Wuling Air, an electric vehicle. It is being constructed by SGMW Motor Indonesia as part of a joint venture between SAIC Motor Corp Ltd., General Motors Co. and Wuling Motors.
Jan 2023: Aneka Tambang, Indonesia, and Hong Kong CBL Limited (a subsidiary of China’s CBL) sign a conditional share buy agreement for partial ownership at Antams's nickel mine, East Halmahera in North Maluku.
